Employers choose between offering Family Leave Insurance (FLI) or Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FMLI). Then, there are a range of flexible options to design a plan to meet your coverage goals. Choose a Family and Medical Leave Plan or a Family Leave Plan

Because The Hartford offers coverage for both scenarios, employers can choose a plan type that works best for their needs. The table below illustrates the FMLI/FLI differences in paid leave coverage:

Leave can be taken in the following increments of time:
  • Intermittently in hours or days over an approved period of leave
  • On a reduced work schedule basis, consistently taken from week-to-week, in hours or days over an approved period of leave and
  • Continuously based on the employee's work schedule

Employers can work with their insurance brokers to customize an FMLI or FLI plan to fit their coverage goals and their budget. The table below outlines the options:
Eligibility Waiting Period
The ability for the employer to define employee’s eligibility waiting periods. 100% employee-pay-all plans will have a 6-month eligibility waiting period
Elimination Period
Variations on benefit elimination periods and whether they apply to the overall available leave durations (a short period of time, 7 calendar days, at the beginning of a leave that is unpaid)
Coverage Amount
A range of benefit percentages beginning at 60% and going up
Leave Duration
A range of leave durations beginning at 6 weeks and going up to 26 weeks
Maximum Benefit Amount
A maximum weekly benefit expressed in a flat $ amount or indexed annually based on the Social Security taxable wage cap
Contribution Options
A variety of ways to pay for the coverage:
•employer pays all;
•employer and employee share in the cost
•employee pays all.
For 100% employee-pay-all plans, an eligibility waiting period will be required
